Es relevante que Nueva Yok ponga a la urbanista y activista Jane Jacobs como modelo
Promovida por la Municipal Art Society y financiada por la Rockefeller Foundation, el pasado 25 de septiembre se abrió en Nueva York una exposición en homenaje a Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), autora de libros de economía, ecología y urbanismo, famosa por Muerte y vida de las grandes ciudades americanas (1961), poniendo énfasis en la Jacobs activista, quien, por ser mujer y no formar parte de la élite planificadora, sufrió el rechazo de políticos, técnicos y académicos.
Presente en luchas urbanas de Norteamérica y Canadá (en 1968 se trasladó a Toronto, en protesta por la Guerra de Vietnam), a veces detenida por sus acciones pacíficas -criticando un parque, oponiéndose a la demolición de un edificio histórico-, Jacobs ha inspirando a nuevos grupos como Nos quedamos, los latinos de UPROSE, NAG (Neighbors Against Garbage) yOWN (Organization of Waterfront Neighborhoods).
Jacobs se convirtió en la contrafigura del poderoso Robert Moses, denominado “el zar”, representante del despotismo de los urbanistas que no tienen en cuenta a la gente, quien llegó a concentrar el máximo poder como arquitecto municipal de Nueva York. Una de las luchas más señaladas que encabezó Jacobs fue oponerse en 1962 a la Lower Manhattan Expressway, autopistas y nudos que Moses proponía y que lograron detenerse, manteniéndose a salvo el West Village.
También en Barcelona tuvimos durante el “porciolismo” proyectos semejantes, como la Via O en Gràcia o como la vía rápida que hubiera machacado la Rambla y que, afortunadamente, tampoco se realizaron.
La exposición Jane Jacobs and the future of New York explica los cuatro principios que aplicó para detectar la vitalidad o enfermedad de las ciudades: mezcla de usos, calles frecuentadas, edificios variados y densidad suficiente, es decir, lo que aporta calidad de vida, seguridad y solidaridad.
Se avisa a la ciudadanía que debe estar alerta y ser activa en la defensa de lo urbano, y se aportan herramientas a los visitantes para que observen, se informen, interpreten críticamente, se reúnan, participen y comuniquen, defendiendo las cualidades de sus barrios y reclamando lo que se debe mejorar. Curiosa llamada casi oficial en defensa del activismo ciudadano que, con el lema la ciudad eres tú, sugiere explícitamente la asociación, participación y acción.
Entre la literatura neoyorkina abundan llamadas a contrapuntar el peso de las grandes corporaciones y habitantes ricos. En el libro colectivo The Suburbanization of New York (2007) autores como Marshall Berman, Lucy Lippard y Michael Sorkin denuncian que se ha convertido en “una gran tienda”, el comercio ha triunfado sobre la comunidad y el auge de la inversión inmobiliaria ha llevado al declive de la ciudad industrial.
Y la revista Time Out de finales de septiembre se preguntó “¿Ha perdido Manhattan su alma?” y analizó la “gentrification” de los barrios más característicos, midiéndolos con tres valores que resumen los principios de Jacobs (buenas calles, mezcla de gentes y edificios variados de tamaño medio) y añadiendo tres, sintomáticos del momento actual: dos negativos -la presión de los llamados “asesinos del comercio tradicional”, es decir, las cadenas internacionales, lo que Jacobs denominó “exceso de éxito”, que origina el encarecimiento de los barrios- y uno positivo, si el barrio mantiene sus valores genuinos.
Este llamado a tomar conciencia de que la ciudad comunitaria, local y de la mezcla está en peligro es un referente para todas las ciudades. En cada una de ellas se libran pugnas similares entre los intereses de los operadores de la globalización neoliberal, que proponen la privatización y tematización de las ciudades, expanden arquitectura genérica que borra memoria y preexistencias, y ocasionan el encarecimiento de las viviendas, destruyendo las redes sociales y de trabajo existentes y, cada barrio, con sus habitantes y características, que luchan por la calidad de vida. Y es muy sintomático que los mismos responsables de la gran manzana reclamen a sus habitantes que estén atentos y luchen por una ciudad de la gente, conscientes de que si no cuentan con la participación crítica de su ciudadanía, la ciudad va a degenerar y se va a convertir en un monstruo contra natura que no acoge sino que excluye.
Por ello es tan relevante que Nueva York ponga hoy a la urbanista y activista Jane Jacobs como modelo, con una exposición que muestra la formación de una nueva generación de jóvenes líderes vecinales en barrios como Brooklyn, el Bronx y Queens, destacando realizaciones como la High Line, obra de los arquitectos Diller y Scofidio, con los equipos Field Operations y Renfro, un éxito de los vecinos del sur de Manhattan que han conseguido transformar una vieja línea de tren elevada en un parque lineal.
Luchas para mejorar sus barrios y para no ser expulsados similares a las que en Barcelona han librado los habitantes de las casas baratas de Bon Pastor, que mantienen los vecinos del Pla Caufec, el Poble Nou, Ciutat Vella y la Barceloneta, y que el 20 de octubre se reunieron en el Forat de la Vergonya para coordinar sus acciones.

i have a lovehate relationship with magazines. when i’m lucid, i recognize them as generally useless, deceitful and disposable. other times i can’t help being seduced by all that shine and prettiness.

i went up to the rack. i grabbed and leafed through the fashion mags. i felt naughty. i wanted some of that carne that looked so good. i almost couldn’t help myself from buying vman with david gandy on the cover. i blushed it was so obscene and yummy.

but i cooled down, managed to resist, picked up the last issue of dwell instead. it felt like the right thing to do, after all, since the cover promised something about the new green revolution conscience or whatever. for a second i was happy with my strategic consumption choice. soon enough i realized the whole buy green thing was, in a sense, bullshit. i should have gone with the seminaked male model.

the issue is replete with the usual deluxy pads (talk about obscene) and supposedly eco must-haves. it was a nice match to the just as dissappointing october 2007 issue of metropolis mag, promising a “green leap forward” (btw, when did maoism become p.c. again?). sorry metropolis, but this time you sucked. arts&craftsy furniture with trees carved into them? sustainable carpeting? 130 euro camper shoes? is this the best we can do? is this really a good starting point?

does small is beautiful as in nouvelle cuisine apply to environmental concerns? will the current (peaking) green hype come crumbling down like its late-eighties culinary equivalent?

now i’m just angry and hungry and horny.

sometimes i feel really stupid.

i was trying to think of why i’m drawn to architecture.
the answer is: because architecture is (still) an important component of space-making.

truth is, though, i’m less and less drawn to architecture itself (architectural production, the world of architects, etc.) and more and more drawn to architectural spoils, leftovers.

i have a problem. my eyes hurt, twitch. they betray me. i spend 9 or 10 hours a day staring at blinking scrolling screens. i have forgotten the quiet reads i had in school. reading now involves the purr of machines, printers and cpu’s. i don’t flip or feel pages anymore. i barely write anything by hand anymore, some post-its or jots on a notebook maybe. in school i took hand-written notes on notecards while reading. now i skim, scan, click, double-click, type. i wonder through amazon or google books instead of shelves. i’m addicted to wikipedia. i skip through nyt online and do a daily ceremonious blogroll. i’ve been blogging for over four years now, and i’ve changed. i don’t know if it’s for better or worse.

we are sliding towards an irreversible obsession with totally visual communication. text is struggling to keep up. only dense, layered, information-rich text cuts it in the online world, preferably broken up with images and other information, which might explain why the blog form, in particular the visual blog, is currently so successful.
